Getting Started with Beekeeping
The SSBKA beginner’s beekeeping course aims to teach you the basics of keeping bees to enable you to start keeping bees in a way that ensures you get enjoyment out of your new hobby. The course is divided into seven sessions taking place every 3 to 4 weeks between May and September and incorporates both theory and practical where you will learn about the session topic in morning theory session before getting the opportunity to practice what you have learnt on a live colony in the afternoon.
Subjects covered include:
- Ecology of the honey bee
- Setting up an apiary and equipment required
- Inspections and record keeping
- Swarm control
- Disease control
- Honey extraction
- Overwintering your bees
The course costs £100. No equipment is necessary as we will provide suits and hive tools. There is a reduced price of £50 for children.
